Armed gardaí arrested a man after a stand-off in Co Donegal this morning following an incident where the man had barricaded himself into a house at Convent Road in Letterkenny and was refusing to come out.

Officers from the Armed Response Unit and uniformed Gardai arrived on the scene just before 11am and sealed off the area. They pleaded with the man to come out but he refused.

A number of Gardai including members of the Armed Support Unit blocked off the area as the dramatic scene unfolded. Local workers were also asked to remove their cars.

However, shortly after midday the man tried to escape and ran towards the town's Lower Main Street area.

He was pursued by armed Gardai who eventually overpowered him.

The man was arrested and brought to Letterkenny Garda station.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed: "One man has been arrested following an incident in Letterkenny and is currently in custody."

It is understood the man arrested is known to Garda and had appeared before the local courts in recent days.

An eyewitness to the dramatic arrest said "It was like something from a scene of Love Hate. I was walking down the street and all of a sudden I saw these armed Gardai ordering a man to get on the ground.

"They eventually overpowered him and arrested him and he was taken away.

"You don't expect that in Letterkenny on a Friday lunchtime."
