Former Garda Confidential Recipient 'was concerned about whistleblower'

It has been claimed that the now-dismissed Garda Confidential Recipient requested to meet whistleblower Sergeant Maurice McCabe because he was concerned for his welfare.

Last night, the Minister for Justice said he had no option but to fire Oliver Connolly, after the leak of a transcript of a conversation he held with Sergeant McCabe.

The second Garda whistleblower, John Wilson, told Shannonside Radio that all of the circumstances should have been investigated before Mr Connolly was removed from his post.

"Mr Connolly is a scapegoat in all of this," he said.

"He contacted Sergeant McCabe and he requested to meet Sergeant McCabe urgently.

"He was so concerned for Sergeant McCabe's welfare. The way this has been portrayed it's as if Mr Connolly was threatening Sergeant McCabe.

"Mr Connolly was very, very concerned for Sergeant McCabe, and he relayed to Sergeant McCabe certain concerns that I find very, very, very disturbing."
