A father taken into garda custody for being drunk, died today in hospital.

The 43-year-old from Dublin lost consciousness in Store Street garda station in the city on Tuesday evening.

Garda Headquarters issued a statement tonight saying he was taken into custody while uncooperative and intoxicated.

The man had refused to get into an ambulance called to Dominic Street in the north inner city by people concerned for his safety.

The Dublin Fire Brigade ambulance crew alerted gardaí who arrived on the scene at 7.25pm to take the man to Store Street.

Gardaí said they had no alternative but to take the man into custody in the interests of his safety and that of the general public.

Minutes after arriving at the garda station, at 7.41pm, the man appeared to lose consciousness and was treated by an officer trained in resuscitation, gardaí said.

An ambulance was called and arrived around 20 minutes later, taking the man to the Mater Hospital.

He was pronounced dead today, never having regained consciousness.

According to Garda HQ, the man’s relatives were immediately informed once it was known who he was.

State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy is to carry out a post mortem examination in the morning.

Garda Superintendent Thady Muldoon, based at Kevin Street in Dublin, has been asked to carry out an internal inquiry into the case.
