Ireland has been mandated by the EU to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% between now and 2030.

Ireland has been mandated by the EU to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% between now and 2030.

The Commission is also setting an energy efficiency target of 27% over the next 16 years.

EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso says the programme of lowering greenhouse emissions will now be left to individual member states according to their economies.
