Thousands of people will be out in force today in an effort to raise funds for hospice services as forecasters predict heavy rain to spread across the country.

Volunteers will be selling sunflowers and sunflower pins and seeds today and tomorrow to raise money to ensure good end of life care for people.

Chief executive of the Irish Hospice Foundation, Sharon Foley, said that the charity is more reliant than ever on the generosity and goodwill of its supporters.

"All the funds that are raised on National Sunflower Day go to local hospice services," she said.

"What we're trying to do is bring the best posssible end-of-life care to the people of Ireland."
