One man is being questioned today after customs officers from Dublin Port seized between five and six million smuggled cigarettes late last night..
The 45-foot container had arrived in Dublin Port last week from Barcelona and was heading towards Dundalk when it was stopped on the M1 motorway near Dundalk.
Revenue say there were 25 palettes and some empty boxes on the pallets in the load which had been marked as hair extensions.
Revenue say the seizure resulted from normal profiling and they estimate the loss had the Regal brand cigarettes gone on sale to be around €1.6m.
Inquiries are continuing.
