Derry Girls and Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan wore a dramatic look of a corseted black velvet dress and a statement black and gold headpiece to attend the star-studded Vogue World event.

The actress, 36, joined stars from the worlds of fashion, music and theatre – including Kate Winslet, Alexa Chung and Stormzy – at London’s Theatre Royal Drury Lane on Thursday night.

The blockbuster show included appearances from supermodels Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford, a musical performance by Annie Lennox and a monologue from actress Sophie Okonedo.

Coughlan’s dress was custom-made by British-American designer Harris Reed.

Reed has previously dressed celebrities including Beyonce, Florence Pugh and Harry Styles, and debuted his most recent collection on Wednesday night at London Fashion Week, with model Ashley Graham taking to the catwalk.

Reed told British Vogue the look for Coughlan was inspired by Old Hollywood styles, re-imagining them for a modern movie star.

“What I love about Nicola and so many of the individuals I get to work with, like Ashley Graham and Precious Lee, is that they feel so confident within their skin and know how they want their body to feel,” he said.

“Nicola owns who she is, she knows what she wants and she’s fierce.”

The gown was made of black velvet with a silk double duchess satin wrap, and the ethereal halo-style headpiece was by Reed’s regular collaborator, accessories designer Vivienne Lake.

Coughlan’s make-up artist, Neil Young, described her look on Instagram as channelling “celestial radiance”.

Using Pat McGrath products, she had glowing skin, a black cat-eye, a slight shimmer on her lids and on-trend peach lips.

The Pat McGrath Divine Bronzer in Naked Desire (retailing at €37) was used on “the edges of the face to sculpt and shape”, Young wrote.

The Perma Precision Liquid Eyeliner (€34) was used to create the extreme cat-eye. To get the look yourself, Young said: “Sweep [the eyeliner] along the upper lash line starting at the inner corner of the eye. Extend straight out at the outer corner and repeat at the outer corner to thicken and intensify the liner.”

Finally, the lip shape was defined using the PermaGel Ultra Lip Pencil in Buff (€28) and finished with the Satin Allure Lipstick in Nude Romantique (€29).

Galway-born Coughlan shot to fame on TV series Derry Girls – inspired by writer Lisa McGee’s experiences growing up in Northern Ireland in the 1990s – and more recently appeared alongside Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in the summer blockbuster Barbie.

She also plays Penelope Featherington in period Netflix show Bridgerton, with the next series set to put the spotlight on her romance with Colin Bridgerton (played by Luke Newton).

Coughlan has made a name for herself as an experimental red carpet dresser, who is not afraid of bold silhouettes and bright colours.

She wore another Old Hollywood-inspired outfit to the European premiere of Barbie in July – a glamorous Wiederhoeft gown dripping with Swarovski crystals – and dazzled in a structured couture Valentino dress at the Baftas in February.
