Here are the most borrowed books from Irish libraries in 2018

The Local Government Management Agency have revealed the list of the most borrowed books from Irish public libraries in 2018.

The top 20 were all titles aimed at children with the Harry Potter series still proving hugely popular.

JK Rowling's first Potter novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, tops the list with The Chamber of Secrets and The Prisoner of Azkaban also featuring in the top five.

On the list of most borrowed authors, 19 of the top 20 were children's authors with James Patterson (who ranked 6th) bucking the trend.

Roderick Hunt, author of The Magic Key, came out on top as the most borrowed author.

Mr Patterson was the most borrowed author on the list for adult books, leading Nora Roberts and Danielle Steel who came in second and third.

Mike McCormack's Solar Bones was the most borrowed adult book in 2018, with Graham Norton's Holding and Lying In Wait by Liz Nugent completing the top three.

"Encouraging children to read for enjoyment and learning is central to Our Public Libraries 2022, the national Public Library Strategy, so I am very encouraged to see so many children’s books and authors on the list," said Tom Enright, Chair of the National Libraries Development Committee.

"The Irish public library collection has over 12 million items available to you completely free, and we are inviting everybody, young and old, to explore what’s on offer."

“Whether you want to come in to your library to browse for a book, use the internet, make use of digital equipment, enjoy the community space and wide range of activities, or you would prefer to download an audiobook, eBook, or online newspaper or magazine from your own home, it is all open to you completely free with your library membership."
