Ireland is in the grip of winter's coldest snap so far.

It is causing treacherous road conditions throughout the country, with the Midlands, East and North the worst hit.

Temperatures dropped overnight to -4C in some places and forecasters say there is more to come.

Met Eireann spokesman, Pat Clark, says there is unlikely to be much of a thaw today: "The weather has been very mild so far this winter, there has been very little in the way of frost.

"But it is very cold at the moment, it was very cold last night and temperatures are well below freezing in many parts of the country and they will be slow to rise today."
