Depleted uranium may be present on aircraft flying through Irish airspace and using both Dublin and Shannon airports, according to the Green Party.
Depleted uranium has, for some time, been used as a ballast, or counter-weights, on civilian and cargo aircraft.
Given the recent revelations about the health scare associated with it, Green TD John Gormley wants the Government to say if such aircraft are landing at Irish airports.
"We understand there are some aircrafts belonging to Pakistan airlines that are flying into Shannon, at least once a week. We want clarification on the issue. The consequences of a crash with a plane containing depleted uranium would be devastating," he said.
