Fifty new jobs have been announced as the Mater Private will open two new day hospitals in Cherrywood and Northern Cross in Dublin.

The €13 million investment will allow for same-day specialist care, aimed at speeding up the time between GP referrals and specialist treatment plans for cardiothoracic surgery, orthopaedics and spinal surgery.

The day hospitals will also cover areas such as cardiology and radiology with plans to expand the offerings into areas like oncology in the next 12 months.

The Mater Private Network estimate that waiting times between referral and seeing a specialist will reduce by six to eight weeks.

The purpose-built day hospitals will allow patients to attend multiple appointments, investigative imaging and tests in one day without having to transfer to another location.

This integrated approach will allow approximately 50,000 patients to be seen each year.

Chief executive of the Mater Private Network, John Hurley said the service to be offered in the new day hospitals has never been seen in Ireland before and was the most significant investment in the last decade.

“The opening of the Day Hospitals is a major step in expanding our healthcare offering across the Mater Private Network, positioning the patient and their GP at the centre of our healthcare approach in line with international best practice.

“We are ambitious for the future and look forward to expanding our offering to include a range of other specialities and services to provide for the ever-evolving needs of our patients.”
