Google has halted plans to rent an office space in Dublin.

The tech giant made the decision to not take out the lease on the Sorting Office in Grand Canal Dock.

It is believed the office space would have capacity for up to 2,000 staff members.

Google currently employs 8,000 people in Ireland.

The company said in July that most of its employees will be allowed to work from home until July 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a statement, the company says it is committed to Ireland and continues to invest in its Irish operations.

The office space, designed by Henry J Lyons architects, is located on the corner of Cardiff Lane and Hanover Street East, opposite the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre.

The space is also in close proximity to the European headquarters of several other global technology giants including Facebook and Airbnb.
