The operator is hoping the move could reduce car journeys to and from the facility while encouraging the use of public transport, and also deter private drivers from picking passengers up outside terminals, according to the Irish Times.
The planned new area would operate in front of terminal one and terminal two, with the airport's internal road layout changed and new lanes and barriers installed at the main airport exit.
The new zone is awaiting approval from Fingal County Council and will not be installed during the Covid-19 crisis.
Circling
A spokesman for DAA said the current system has been “abused” for years as pick-ups from private cars in front of the airport’s terminals are prohibited, but cars continue to illegally wait or circle the airport’s roads several times before collecting an arrival.
DAA has not yet decided which charges could be implemented in the new set down area, however, it says all revenue from the zone will be invested in sustainability initiatives at the airport such as a proposed solar farm.
If the project receives approval from planning authorities, construction work will take place shortly to minimise disruption during the current downturn in passenger numbers.
A free drop-off and pick-up option will remain available at the airport’s express red long-term car park.
