The amount of cases of swine flu worldwide passed 10,000 today as health chiefs from around the globe continued discussions on how best to fight the disease.

The World Health Organisation said 10,243 people were infected with swine flu, with 80 deaths, mostly in Mexico.

The 413 newly-confirmed cases come mostly from the United States and Japan.

The continued spread of the disease comes as the WHO's 193 member states met in Geneva to hammer out treatment and response plans as well as vaccinations to combat the disease.

The global health body has its pandemic alert scale at phase 5, meaning a global flu epidemic is deemed "imminent."
