Burma opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has welcomed steps by the international community to reach out to her country long isolated because of its military dictatorship.

The Nobel laureate said "the international community is trying very hard to bring my country into it and it's up to our country to respond the right way".

Ms Suu Kyi arrived in Geneva, Switzerland, yesterday on her first visit to Europe in 24 years.

She spent 15 years of her more than two decade struggle against Burma's ruling junta under house arrest.

She will make a speech today at the annual meeting of the International Labour Organisation. She is due to visit Ireland next week.

The agency decided yesterday to lift restrictions on Burma's participation in its work in recognition of recent democratic reforms in the country.
