Three Palestinian government cars tonight passed through the Rafah border crossing into Egypt to fetch Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh after gunmen from his Hamas group seized control of the terminal.
Witnesses saw three cars cross through the border area, despite an earlier announcement by European monitors that the border was closed.
Under an international agreement, the border can only operate in the presence of European Union monitors.
The monitors fled the area after Hamas gunmen seized control of the terminal.
Maria Telleria, spokeswoman for the monitors, said the border would be reopened tomorrow.
But an Egyptian security official said the monitors were expected to return to allow Haniyeh to enter Gaza.
Hani Jabour, a Palestinian official travelling with Haniyeh, said the prime minister was at the gates of the terminal, speaking to Egyptian and Hamas officials.
Dozens of Hamas supporters gathered on the Palestinian side of the gate to greet Haniyeh.
