One person has reportedly been killed and at least 20 are reported to have been injured after police launced a car chase on the A2 motorway near Paris.

Brothers Said, 34, and Cherif Kouachi, 32, who are suspected to have been the gunmen who carried out the attack at the offices of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo on Wednesday that left 12 people dead, stole a Peugeot this morning in the town of Montagny Sainte Felicite, about 30 miles north east of Paris.

The brothers are believed to be holed up in a commercial building on the outskirts of Paris and negotiations are currently underway, according to reports.

French interior minister Bernard Cazeneuve confirmed an operation was underway to detain the two brothers in Dammartin-en-Goele, about 25 miles north east of Paris.

Mr Cazeneuve spoke moments after an emergency meeting with the French president, prime minister and top police officials.

The French Interior Ministry says hostages had been taken - and is appealing for residents in the area to stay indoors.
