A strong magnitude 5.9 earthquake has shaken up northern Chile today but there are no reports of injury or damage.

A strong magnitude 5.9 earthquake has shaken up northern Chile today but there are no reports of injury or damage.

Authorities ruled out the possibility of a tsunami.

The US Geological Survey said the quake was centred 52 kilometres (32 miles) off the Chilean coast, west of the city of Taltal.

Police said there was a temporary interruption in fixed and mobile telephone service in some areas.
