Eight people were killed as heavy rain and high winds lashed Mozambique over the weekend, emergency officials said today.

Manuel Machaieie, of the Disasters Management Institute, told Radio Mozambique that three people were killed yesterday when a tree fell on their homes in southern Mozambique’s Xai Xai district. State media said scores of homes and schools were destroyed.

State radio said five fishermen were killed off the central port city of Beira on Saturday. Authorities were still warning fishermen not to venture out today.

Local media reported that the severe weather caused by Irina, a cyclone later downgraded to a tropical storm, killed four people in neighbouring South Africa.

Last month, two cyclones destroyed homes, crops and water and sanitation facilities across Mozambique.
