Japan lifts tsunami warning after quake

A tsunami warning issued by the Japanese authorities for a tsunami after a strong earthquake struck in the seas was cancelled an hour later.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the epicentre of the magnitude 6.8 quake was at a shallow point near the Yonaguni islands.

The warning was for a tsunami of up to 3ft after the earthquake in the seas south of Okinawa and east of Taiwan.

It was unclear if any tsunami had hit shores of islands in the area, and television footage of a nearby island showed calm seas.

The public broadcaster NHK said there were no initial reports of damage.
