A 9/11 survivor whose photograph became one of the enduring images of the terrorist attacks has died, aged 42, after suffering from stomach cancer.
Marcy Borders became known as the "dust lady" after a photo showed her covered in dust as she escaped the World Trade Centre during the attacks.
Ms Borders, a mother of two, died on Monday.
She had blamed her cancer on inhaling dust during the attack.
Anthony De Palma, Author of City of Dust, said that these claims may in fact be true as the dust was particularly toxic.
"There was an extraordinarily sinister combination of chemicals and toxins and elements in that pulverised dust that resulted from the collapse of two enormous buildings," said Mr De Palma.
"And the science so far indicates that that dust was unique."
