Eight-year-old girl killed as gunmen attack anti-government protest

An eight-year-old girl has died and dozens of others have been wounded when gunmen attacked an anti-government protest in Thailand.

The attack in Trat province, about 180 miles east of the capital Bangkok yesterday evening is the latest in a string of protest-related violence over the past three months.

Protesters want Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to resign to make way for an appointed interim government to implement anti-corruption reforms, but she has refused.

Police Lieutenant Thanabhum Newanit says unidentified assailants in a pick-up truck shot into the crowd and two explosive devices went off.

It was not clear if the protesters, who often use armed guards, fought back.

National Security Council chief Lieutenant General Paradorn Pattanathuabutr confirmed the girl’s death.
