At least 19 Iraqi soldiers have been killed in a dual suicide car bombing at a military base just north of the capital Baghdad.

Officials say two suicide bombers drove their explosive-laden cars into the military base in the town of Tarmiyah. They say the blast wounded 41 people.

Police say the first bomber cleared the way for the other to strike in the heart of the base.

Violence has escalated in Iraq since a deadly security crackdown on a Sunni protest camp in April, with the pace of killing reaching levels unseen since 2008.
