Authorities investigate jet near-miss in the US
America’s Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a terrifying near-miss between a Spirit Airlines flight and a skydiving plane that forced the passenger jet to dive sharply.
A passenger said flight attendants bumped their heads, luggage bins popped open and screaming passengers feared they would die.
The FAA said Sunday’s flight with 126 passengers was heading from Detroit, Michigan, to Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, when controllers reported another plane nearby.
The Spirit jet received an automated warning to immediately descend 1,600 feet and the FAA said the planes were within 1.6 miles of each other.
Passenger Janet Dunnabeck called the experience “horrifying” and said a pilot explained the dive afterwards.
Spirit said the pilots acted appropriately.
