Austria’s National Bank has ordered the freezing of assets belonging to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi and his entourage in line with EU sanctions.

The bank said about €1.2bn Libyan deposits are currently in Austrian financial institutions but that it is still unclear if and how much of this money belongs to the Gaddafi family and their allies.

The announcement comes after the European Union issued travel bans and an asset freeze against senior Libyan officials, and ordered an arms embargo on the country following the deadly uprising.
