Arab League 'condemns air strike'

The Arab League has reportedly condemned yesterday's air strikes in Libya, despite the organisation appealing to the international community to enforce a no-fly zone.

The Arab League has reportedly condemned yesterday's air strikes in Libya, despite the organisation appealing to the international community to enforce a no-fly zone.

Secretary general Amr Mussa was quoted as saying: “What has happened in Libya differs from the goal of imposing a no-fly zone.

“What we want is the protection of civilians and not bombing other civilians.”

Other reports said planes from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates air forces were expected to patrol Libyan skies to enforce the no-fly zone.

Russia, one of five countries on the UN security council which abstained in Thursday's vote, today joined criticism of the bombing raids.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said the strikes hit non-military targets.

He added: “We are calling on the respective states to halt the indiscriminate use of force.”
