44 hurt after two buses crash in Lincoln Tunnel in the US

Two New Jersey Transit buses heading to New York City's Port Authority Bus Terminal have collided in the Lincoln Tunnel, injuring 44 people.

Port Authority police spokesman Joe Pentangelo said the crash occurred in the morning rush hour in the tunnel's centre tube.

He said the injuries are not considered life-threatening, with the most serious being a broken jaw.

New Jersey Transit spokeswoman Lisa Torbic said a bus heading from Ridgefield rear-ended a bus coming from Fairview.

Both buses were removed by mid-morning, but motorists heading into New York City faced major delays.

The Lincoln Tunnel travels under the Hudson River and connects Weehawken, New Jersey, with mid-Manhattan.

The Port Authority said 42 million vehicles use the tunnel every year.
