Team Ireland has 'some really good opportunities' for medals at Euros

Athletics Ireland high performance director Kevin Ankrom has said they have opportunities for medals this weekend at the European Indoor Championships in Gothenburg.

Hurdler Derval O'Rourke, 3000 metre runner Ciaran O'Lionaird and Europe's fastest 400 metres runner this year so far, Brian Gregan, are all part of an 11-person team.

The team also includes double European Cross country Gold medallist Fionnuala Britton who will run in the 3000 metres.

Ankrom said they can come home with medals if things go their way.

Ankrom said: "I think Derval is definitely a championship performer, as we all know, and if she can get herself through the rounds without any injuries, a lot of things happen in those races, she can have a crack at it.

"Gregan the same thing, the rounds are going to be tough to get through for him, but if he can get through it he is capable of knocking on the door for a medal.

"And the same thing for Ciaran O'Lionaird, he has got to take it step-by-step, and those are some really good opportunities that we have got for the team."
