'Unsafe conditions' force Man City to postpone match

Manchester City’s Premier League clash with Sunderland has been postponed, Greater Manchester Police have confirmed.

The match has fallen victim to the severe weather which has battered the north west.

A tweet from police read: “GAME OFF – Manchester City’s V Sunderland has been called off because conditions are deemed ’unsafe’. #MCFC”

City might have had the opportunity to move back to the top of the Premier League had the game gone ahead and other results gone in their favour.

The game will now have to be rearranged for later in the season, creating extra fixture congestion for a side still competing in four competitions.

Following two pitch inspections at the Britannia Stadium, where Stoke were preparing to play host to Swansea, the decision was made to delay kick-off by 15 minutes.

The club tweeted: “Kick-off of #SCFC v Swansea has been put back to 8pm, due to traffic issues around the Britannia Stadium.”

Another area covered by the warnings and affected by the weather was Merseyside, where Everton are due to host Crystal Palace.

Everton earlier on Wednesday were monitoring the situation ahead of the game at Goodison Park.

A club statement read: “For those asking, we are aware of the forecast and will monitor throughout the day. At this stage the game is very much on.”
