John Giles put the boot into Richie Sadlier’s playing career live on air last night.
The panel were discussing Arsenal’s dismal performance against Monaco in the Champions League and Giles was discussing what was required of players in big, high-pressure games.
“I was very lucky,” he said. “I played in big matches like this, so did Didi (Hamann).
“Not so much Richie.”
At the last minute Giles heard what he was saying and turned to Sadlier: “I don’t mean that disrespectfully.”
No, of course not.
Sadlier scored 34 goals for Millwall in 103 starts for the club. He made a single appearance in the Republic of Ireland senior team, in 2002, before being forced to retire prematurely in 2003 with a hip injury.
Harsh John, harsh.
