Cavan striker scores beauty in the Champions League

Cavan native Cillian Sheridan scored a great goal for Cypriot side APOEL FC last night as they beat Aalborg 4-0 and progressed to the group stages of the Champions League.

His side were already leading 3-0 in the second-half when Sheridan took control of the ball and finished with a lovely volley to complete the win. See the goal from 2:30.

With his former club Celtic knocked out by a late Maribor goal, Sheridan will be the only Irish footballer playing in the competition this year.

He spoke to uefa.com after the game.

“We were confident of getting the win but this was a thoroughly great performance,” said Sheridan.

“It does make me feel lonely that I am the only Irishman in the Champions League but it is also a good thing.”

The player also extended his sympathy towards his former club: “It was a shame [former club] Celtic did not go through. My final game for Celtic was a defeat by Aalborg in Europe, so it was a case of revenge tonight for me.”

Sheridan has three senior Irish caps and this is his second season with APOEL FC, who are the current Cypriot champions.
