Jared Payne is out of the Rugby World Cup because scans have found a fracture in his foot.

The Ulster and Ireland centre sustained the injury druing Ireland's win over Romania almost two weeks ago and was left out of the squad to face France tomorrow.

However, following training on Wednesday he was still feeling "discomfort" in the area and Irish management sent him for scans which revealed a foot fracture.

He will return to Ireland for specialist treatment and will take no further part in the tournament.

The IRFU said no decision will be made until after Sunday's fixture on a replacement.

Andrew Trimble and Noel Reid will be in the frame to replace Payne.
