The former Ireland and Munster captain will appear on the BBC’s coverage of the Six Nations game between Ireland and France on Saturday.

He will be sharing the studio with another former Ireland international, Keith Wood, among others.

Earlier O’Connell opened up about the difficult decision to retire in a wide-ranging interview with Michael Corcoran on RTÉ Radio.

He may be trying his hand at punditry this weekend, but he admits he is considering a number of different career options.

“I’ve a number of things on the go,” O’Connell said. “I’m doing a book at the moment which I’ll probably have to start working very hard at now.

“I’m involved in quite a few initiatives around Limerick which I’ll probably take a bigger part in now as well.

But long-term O’Connell admitted he was likely to be drawn back to rugby.

“I’ll have a look at coaching as well, it’s something that interests me,” he said. “Some days it’s something I really want to do and other days it’s the last thing I want to do!”

“I think with a young family it’s a difficult job to do but it interests me and there’s certain roles in rugby definitely that interest me.

“I haven’t made any decisions but I’ve a few ideas of what I want to do.”
