RDS to be redeveloped

The Royal Dublin Society and Leinster Rugby have today launched an architectural competition for a design to redevelop the RDS.

The redesign is set to increase capacity from its current level of 18,500 to 25,000 and will also encompass a major upgrade of facilities at the arena.

The RDS is home to the Dublin Horse Show and has also been home to Leinster Rugby since 2007.

Leinster Chief Executive, Mick Dawson has welcomed the redevelopment:

“This really is fantastic news for all Leinster Rugby supporters, for the players, management and for staff. We have had some wonderful moments in the RDS over the years but it’s now time to look to the future.”

“A 25,000 capacity, purpose built arena will allow us to do that,” he continued, “and provide us with greater commercial opportunities both within the stadium and with regard to naming rights”.

Work is not expected to start on the arena until April 2016 at the earliest and Leinster will continue to play there during the redevelopment.

The selection of the architect is expected to take six months and details of the competition can be found here.
