VIDEO: Bizarre free kick defence unlikely to catch on

We've often seen keepers wind up in 'no man's land'.

But this goalkeeper from French side Nice B decided to plant a flag in No Man's Land and declare No Man's Land a republic.

Five out-field players stood on the goal-line to defend a free kick being taken just outside the penalty box. Meanwhile the goalkeeper himself took up position about eight yards out from goal - roughly where you might expect defenders to form a line.

The play worked with one of the defending players heading the ball away to safety, but it was a high-risk strategy heavily reliant on the defenders’ aerial ability.

Somehow we don’t see this catching on.
