Jordan Speith climbs leaderboard at Colonial but Bryce Molder still out in front
World number two Jordan Spieth surged up the leaderboard at the Dean and Deluca Invitational although Bryce Molder remains the man to catch despite his round being curtailed due to darkness.
Spieth followed up a first round 67 by carding 66 on Friday, where he overcame a poor start on the back nine by flourishing at the turn with birdies on the first, second, fourth and fifth at Colonial Country Club.
The 22-year-old's overall seven under par score moved him up into a tie for third, one behind 2012 US Open champion Webb Simpson, with both players completing their rounds, and two adrift of Molder, who will resume on the 16th on Saturday morning.
Spieth is revelling playing in his home state as he told the PGA Tour's official website: "It is nice coming to a track like Colonial Country Club, a course that everyone really seems to love.
"I love it and to have the fans on my side makes it a really special week."
Molder lit up the front nine for the second day in a row to maintain his one-shot overnight lead.
The 37-year-old from Arkansas, whose only PGA Tour win came when he defeated Briny Baird to lift the Frys.com Open in 2011, was out in 29 in his first round and he picked up where he left off with five birdies to reach the turn in 30.
However, he found bunkers with his first two shots on the par-four 12th and a double bogey dropped him back to nine under overall before his round was suspended three holes later due to the descending darkness.
Patrick Reed, level on seven under alongside Spieth, will resume his round on the ninth on Saturday, while fellow American Jason Dufner and India's Anirban Lahiri, both a shot further back, will begin at the 11th and 13th respectively.
The start of the round was delayed by more than five hours due to thunderstorms although conditions brightened by the time the first group teed off in the early afternoon.
