Another gold for Ireland at IPC World Championships
Michael McKillop completed his expected middle-distance double at the IPC Athletics World Championships in Lyon as Ireland secured their third gold medal of the games.
The Antrim athlete added the T38 1500m crown to the 800m title he claimed at the weekend, replicating his heroics of London 2012.
McKillop broke away from the rest of the field at the bell to open up a lead he would not relinquish, setting a new Championship record of 4:10.17, beating his old mark from Christchurch 2011 by four seconds.
Tunisian Abbes Saidi was second, Deon Kenzie of Australia third.
McKillop is not content to rest on his laurels, saying: "I did a very good season and it paid off. I am quite happy and proud of me. I have to be concentrated for the upcoming events now."
Room-mate Jason Smyth increased the likelihood of him completing a similar double by romping to victory in his 100m T13 semi-final.
Smyth was unchallenged as he came home in a new Championship record of 10.72, breaking a mark he had held himself for seven years.
Catherine O’Neill’s bid for a medal in the women’s F31/32/51 club throw saw her finish sixth with a throw of 13.34 metres as a world record from Maroua Ibrahimi saw Tunisia win gold.
