Aidan O'Brien may run Air Force Blue in shorter races after his disappointing Newmarket outing

Aidan O'Brien is considering giving Air Force Blue another chance to prove himself over a mile in the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh on May 21.

The triple Group One winner failed to make any impact on his first try over the trip on his seasonal return in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on Saturday.

Despite being sent off the 4-5 favourite to capture the colts' Classic, the son of War Front was in trouble a long way out and eventually came home a well-held 12th.

O'Brien said: "It was his first run of the year and in his second last piece of work he was very fast, so we were worried about if he would get the trip. Maybe I trained him too hard.

"I will probably change his work regime a little bit as I know what doesn't work with him and I need to find what does work for him.

"We will have an eye on the Irish 2000 Guineas and will have a look at that and see what the ground is like before deciding if he runs in that or not."

O'Brien admits he is uncertain about whether a mile is the best trip for Air Force Blue, raising the possibility of dropping back in distance.

He told At The Races: "He is a very quick horse.

"The thing is we're not probably going to be sure about whether he will get a mile or drop back to shorter distances, the next couple of weeks will tell us a lot about him.

"Hopefully it (a disappointing run) won't happen again and the next decision we have to make is on where his next race will be."
