McIlroy's love life 'very happy'

World number one golfer Rory McIlroy has spoken about his “very happy” love life, a year after his high profile split from tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.

The 26-year-old Northern Irishman told the Times things were “going great” with Erica Stoll, an American who works for the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA).

The multimillionaire four-time major winner, and Danish former world number one Wozniacki broke off their five-month engagement last May, just days after invitations for their wedding were sent out. They had been together for two years.

McIlroy told the Times today: “I am very happy in my love life.

“We haven’t really been putting it out there. She is from America, which is why I like to spend time in Palm Beach (in Florida). The past six or seven months have been really nice. That part of my life is going great.”

In a wide-ranging interview, McIlroy also spoke about the sacrifice his parents Gerry and Rosie made to help him achieve golfing greatness, working long hours in multiple jobs to allow him to follow his dream when he was a small boy in Holywood, County Down.

He told the Times they both worked “ferociously hard”, adding: “At that age, you just don’t realise the scale of the sacrifice. I thought that it was normal; it is what I had got used to. Looking back today, I realise that it was anything but normal. They were doing it for me, to help me develop my golf. They were not at all pushy; they just wanted me to develop in the game that I loved.”

McIlroy goes into next month’s US Open, a title he won in 2011, after a couple of poor performances on this side of the Atlantic.

Yesterday he missed the cut at the Irish Open title for the third year in succession, posting a second round score of 71 to his opening 80 at a windswept Royal County Down. The poor rounds came days after he shot 78 to miss the cut in the defence of his BMW PGA Championship title at Wentworth in Surrey.
