McIlroy jokily apologises for ‘premature’ celebration

Rory McIlroy has apologised to American Zach Johnson for popping the champagne corks a little too soon yesterday.

Rory McIlroy has apologised to American Zach Johnson for popping the champagne corks a little too soon yesterday.

McIlroy was standing with Graeme McDowell watching Johnson play out the final match against Victor Dubuisson and the Open champion had a champagne bottle in his hand ready to celebrate Europe’s victory.

But he was unprepared when it popped open just as Johnson was about to putt.

Both McDowell and McIlroy jumped in fright when the cork went flying and champagne sprayed out.

He took to Twitter in the last hour to make a tongue-in-cheek apology to the American golfer.

It was just the first of many champagne corks popped - Welshman Jamie Donaldson appeared on Sky this morning and admitted he was still feeling the effects of a heavy night of celebrating.
