Wexford GAA has initiated a ticket swap in the run-up to Sunday’s All-Ireland hurling quarter-finals, to get the able-bodied into the terraces and free up stand tickets.

Wexford face Limerick on Sunday at 2pm and the game is forming part of a double-header in Semple Stadium, with Dublin playing Tipperary at 4pm. With four well-supported counties involved stand tickets are at a premium.

Earlier this week the county suggested moving the games to Croke Park to maximize attendance. This was instigated in reaction to the news that Wexford clubs had been allocated 2000 stand tickets despite requesting 5000.

The county board has since accepted that a change of venue was not going to happen and have come up with a novel way to deal with the problem.

Speaking to the Irish Examiner Wexford Chairman Diarmuid Devereux explained what they were asking of fans:

“We’ve put a swap plan in place in the county and appealed to young and able bodied people, or single people who are capable of standing for the game, to swap with families or elderly people who only have terrace tickets.”

Terrace tickets are still available for Sunday but the combination of standing only and large crowds make them unsuitable for people with young children and the elderly.

He reported that there had been a great response to the request, which they had heavily advertised on local radio stations.

“It just shows the solidarity that’s there among GAA supporters; it’s a credit to them.”

I’ll give you an example from my own club,” said Devereaux. “We had two young couples that were going to go and sit and they handed the tickets back to the club chairmen and he gave them out to a family with two young boys.

“It’s not something you want people to have to do but fair play to them. We’ve no option in the circumstances. We’ll get the maximum number of people possible there that we can.”

Terrace tickets for the double-header are still available at tickets.ie.
