RTÉ’s Marty Morrissey suggested that Galway had proved an important point with their six point quarter-final win at Semple Stadium.

“I don’t know if we proved a point,” Canning said in response. “We just won a quarter-final and that’s all we had to do.”

He then spoke about Clare manager Davy Fitzgerald, who was on the sideline despite being admitted to hospital earlier in the week for tests related to a health concern.

Fitzgerald had minor heart surgery in 2009 to have stents inserted due to a blocked artery.

“We’re amateur players at the end of the day and our health is our wealth, so it was great to see Davy on the line again today,” Canning said.

“That’s what it’s all about about.

“We only play this game for a hobby, that’s all it is. I went through it myself with my mother last year and my dad at the moment, so as long as people are healthy on the sideline. It’s great to see Davy and we wish him the best in his recovery as well.”
