Wicklow’s bid for promotion from Division 4 of the National Football League fell short in Semple Stadium yesterday despite a thrilling three-goal comeback late in the game.
The Garden County trailed Tipperary by seven points as normal time elapsed but reeled off three quick-fire goals without reply to stun those in attendance and record a scarcely believable two-point victory.
Wing-forward Rory Finn grabbed the first of the unlikely late goals with a superb lofted effort that caught Tipperary goalkeeper Matthew O’ Donnell unawares and nestled in the back of the net.
With a minute of injury time played, it appeared Finn’s goal would be no more than a consolation but incredibly James Stafford and Seanie Furlong did likewise in the space of 45 seconds to secure victory for the visitors.
The Premier management will be far from happy with their side’s attitude and defending, but progress to the divisional final against Clare on April 26 in Croke Park regardless of yesterday’s result.
The Banner overcame Antrim to secure their place, but it is Wicklow’s thrilling comeback that will stay in the memory as they claimed a famous 4-12 to 0-22 victory in Thurles.
