Scheduling nightmare for Cork’s football and camogie dual players

Players who represent Cork at both camogie and football are being asked to choose between the two codes at the weekend because of scheduling.

Briege Corkery is one of the players affected.

Cork are to face Tipperary in the Munster Camogie final on Saturday, with the match being played in Cashel at 4.30pm.

Yesterday the Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA) announced that the Tesco Division 1 final replay has been fixed for the same day, to be played in Portlaoise at 7.30pm.

Rena Buckley, Briege Corkery and Meabh Cahalane are the three players affected. They will now have to choose to play for one squad above the other, or attempt to play both.

The Cork team manager Paudie Murray has expressed his frustration with the decision.

“It’s a ridiculous situation and very unfair on the girls involved,” he told the Irish Examiner.

“You’d think that common sense would prevail in a situation like this but obviously not.”

Another of the Cork footballers, Eimear Scally, also expressed her annoyance at the scheduling decision.
