League Sunday: Two straight wins show Dublin’s strength in depth

Dublin impressed the panel with victory against Kilkenny in Nolan Park.

Former Dublin manager Anthony Daly joined Michael Lyster and Cyril Farrell on League Sunday last night and the three were in agreement that Dublin were now a serious hurling proposition after following up last week’s victory over Tipperary by going to Nolan Park to

Cyril Farrell felt the Dubs were in charge even before Kilkenny were reduced to 13 men, and dominated all over the park rather than being reliant on one area.

“They are playing great stuff, they got 25 scores today,” Farrell said. “Even before the two (Kilkenny) lads were sent off they were kind of dominant in the game.

“The backs were very tenacious, but up front the forwards were very lively and picked some great scores.”

Lyster asked Daly what changes he thought new manager Ger Cunningham had made since replacing Daly after six years in charge of the Dublin hurlers.

“Hurling is hurling, but I suppose a change is as good as a break,” Daly answered. “We were there six years, we had a great shot at it and had a great time.

“I’m thrilled for the lads, they got a great appointment in Ger. Vastly experienced, an excellent coach, an excellent hurling brain.”

He said the changes Cunningham made were paying dividends.

“He’s obviously trying a few things, Michael Carton at full-back, Peter Kelly, moving Liam Rushe to the forwards,” Daly said. “Things worked out very well for them, last week and this week and they’re nearly safe already in Division 1A.

“Now you’re only looking up, you’re looking at making sure you’re high up in that table. It’s great for them.”

He was also pleased to see players he saw struggle make their way back to the panel.

“I’m thrilled for them, especially thrilled for the likes of Simon Lambert back in action today after a year and a half with a bad injury. David Treacy back as well. Great to see those lads back, a full panel to pick from, great options.”

Lyster and Farrell both added to the list of Dublin players who impressed.

“Danny Sutcliffe is a great prospect as well,” Lyster said.

Farrell agreed: “Sutcliffe is great in the air. They were doing this all day, scoring from outside. 25 scores is a great score to get.

“All the forwards were causing trouble. They have a full panel now, everyone back and already for the summer it’s looking very good for them.”

Cunningham himself was clearly delighted when interviewed after the win, but was careful to temper expectations and highlight that there was still plenty of work to be done.

“We probably should have closed out the game a bit better when we had the two extra men,” he said. “We lost a bit of composure in the last quarter.

“Up until then we showed good composure on the ball. But again, things to work on for the next day.”

The panel also reviewed the other two games in Division 1A -
