Laois picked up their first points of the NFL Division Two campaign, sending Armagh crashing to their second defeat with a 1-13 to 0-15 success at the Athletic Grounds.

A late Orchard comeback fell just short, after they had battled their way from a seven points deficit.

Paul Cahillane’s 13th minute penalty produced the game’s only goal, the crucial score which was to give the Leinster men the cushion for a valuable victory.

Playing with the wind in the opening half, Donie Kingston and Evan O’Carroll were on target as the O’Moore county built up a 1-7 to 0-6 interval lead, with Stefan Campbell keeping the home side in touch from placed balls.

After the break, Niall Donoher, O’Carroll and Cahillane tagged on points as Laois went seven clear by the three-quarter stage.

But Armagh played their best football in the final quarter, their revival sparked by corner back Shea Heffrons’s well taken score.

Niall Grimley, Campbell and Ethan Rafferty added points, but the visitors held on.

Derry made it two wins from two outings with a 1-12 to 1-10 success at the expense of Cavan at Breffni Park.

Cavan led by 0-6 to 0-5 at the break, with Eugene Keating, Geariod McKiernan, Dara McVeety an Paul O’Connor finding the target.

The Oak Leafers had scores from Ciaran McFaul, Mark Craig, James Kielt and Emmet Bradley, and went in front early on the second half when Cailean O’Boyle palmed home a goal.

Michael Argue fired home a Cavan goal to put the home side back in front, but the visitors responded with a volley of Mark Lynch points to get a grip on the contest.

And they defended stubbornly in the closing stages to claim the points that sent them to the top of the Division Two table.
