Kildare manager admits 'that wasn't the Cork team we saw before'

They may have just defeated Cork comprehensively in their All-Ireland qualifier clash but Kildare manager, Jason Ryan, was still conscious of the quick turn around the Rebels had after last weekend.

“We have been waiting a long time for a win against a Division One team and the week around the Dublin game was really tough for us,” said Jason, “ but we regrouped and are just delighted with the win tonight.

"We went out with a plan, but Cork played differently to what we expected, then they changed again during the game and the players had to adapt as the game progressed.

“But you also have to take into account that Cork only played a few days ago and the conditions were horrendous for that game. It would have taken it out of them both physically and mentally and that wasn't the Cork team we saw put in some fantastic performances in the National League and against Kerry the first day.

“But this campaign has been a real roller coaster for us, with the loss to Dublin a disaster and then we got back on track and thankfully the momentum is going in the right direction now. We have won three games in-a-row, something we haven't done in some time and it gives us that bit of confidence heading into the Kerry game.

“The goal was a crucial score, they hit the bar just before we scored and it put us in a strong position, but we still had to defend well. We went into defensive mode and sometimes when you are defending a lead that can happen as players start to get a bit anxious.

“Cork kept coming at us right to the end and when Colm O'Neill got that wonder goal it gave them another lift and we had a lot of tired bodies in the end, but we are just delighted to win and be back into a quarter-final, somewhere Kildare haven't been for some time,” concluded Jason.
