Donal Óg Cusack not part of Davy Fitzgerald’s Wexford team

Donal Óg Cusack will not be joining Davy Fitzgerald as the Clare man prepares to take over the Wexford senior hurlers, writes Jackie Cahill.

Fitzgerald is expected to be ratified as the Model County’s new boss this evening but Cusack has been touted instead for Donal Moloney and Gerry O’Connor’s ticket running against Anthony Daly, as the race intensifies for the Clare post Fitzgerald recently vacated.

Cusack worked alongside Fitzgerald with Clare in 2016 and may be interested in staying with the Banner County for the sake of potential continuity.

It is understood that Moloney and O’Connor are also hoping to secure Clare’s 1995 and 1997 All-Ireland winning centre back Seanie McMahon as a selector.

Fitzgerald, currently in the north for a few days, has been busy assembling his own backroom team in Wexford.

It is understood that two Wexford natives, including a former player and ex-underage coach, will join him while Fitzgerald is also tipped to add two men he has previously worked with at inter-county level to his package, but not Cusack.

The finer details should be revealed at a planned county board meeting in Wexford this evening, where it’s expected that Fitzgerald will be given the green light to succeed Liam Dunne as Slaneyside supremo.

Fitzgerald met with Wexford county board chairman Diarmuid Devereux and secretary Margaret Doyle at a Portlaoise hotel yesterday, where he indicated that he will be accepting the job.
