Derry club ‘shocked’ as GAA player dies during training session

A 32-year-old Derry club GAA player tragically passed away during a training session last night.

Steven Deeney - a player with the St Aidan’s GAC, Magilligan - died after reportedly collapsing during training at the Roe Valley Leisure Centre in Limavady.

The Limavady Borough Council confirmed to local media that medical attention was at the scene within five minutes, however despite their efforts they were unable to save Deeney.

Speaking to the Derry Journal St Aidan’s club chairman Peter Mullan said the whole club and community cannot believe this has happened.

“We are totally shocked, Steven was the heart and soul of the club, and he was very active in anything that was going on in the club.

“He was a delight to have around and he was just full of life. It’s a great loss to the club and to everyone. He was a much loved and respected club member, and Steven will be sadly missed,” said Mullan.

The club has also released a statement on Steven’s death on their Facebook page.

“It’s with deep shock and a heavy, heavy heart that we, as a club, committee members, players and the entire community send on our deepest and heartfelt sympathies to the entire Deeney family on the passing of Steven.

“A father, son, and brother to them. And one of the Magilligan GAA group. May you rest in peace with God above. Chuid eile i siochain.”

Derry GAA offered their sympathies, on their website, to the Deeney’s family and the entire St Aidan’s GAC, Magilligan club.

“The Derry GAA community is shocked and saddened to learn of the tragic and untimely death of St Aidan’s GAA, Magilligan, player and member, Steven Deeney.

“Our deepest sympathies go to the Deeney family and all at Magilligan GAA. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.”
