Eoin Cadogan has reluctantly relinquished his dual player status at inter-county level, confirming that he will only play for the Cork footballers this season.
In a statement released this evening via the player's Twitter page, he said: "I have decided to commit to the Cork senior football panel exclusively for the 2013 season.
"I have taken this decision very reluctantly but after a period of reflection over the winter and a personal commitment to an education programme, I will not be in a position this year to meet the demands of both codes."
The 26-year-old from Douglas made his senior football bow with the Rebels in 2007 and has won a single All-Ireland SFC medal (2010) as well Munster senior honours (2012) and a succession of National League titles in recent seasons.
Cadogan was a key member of the Cork hurlers' defence last season, starting four Championship matches in the number 6 shirt.
The loss of Cadogan's services is a big blow to hurling boss Jimmy Barry-Murphy who has already lost Darren Sweetnam to a Munster Rugby contract and more recently Damien Cahalane, who has thrown his lot in with the county's footballers.
"I would like to thank all those who have supported my dual commitments. I will be making no further comment on the decision," concluded Cadogan's statement.
Cadogan was back on home soil earlier this week after a break away in Australia. He will start at full-back for Cork in tomorrow's McGrath Cup football quarter-final against Tipperary at Páirc Uí Rinn (throw-in 2pm).
